The Art of Receiving
Healing the Over-Giver
For years, I thought being generous was my superpower. I loved helping, giving, and showing up for my friends and family.
And it was beautiful, but underneath, something was missing.
Because the unfortunate truth is that when you give and give without balance, you don’t actually attract more generosity back. You often attract the opposite: people who take. And no matter how much you give, your own needs remain unmet.
I didn’t see it for years, because like so many givers, I told myself, “It’s fine, I don’t need anything back.”
And yet, what I didn’t realize is that my resistance to receiving was blocking my own blessings.
Why Receiving Feels So Hard
On the surface, receiving sounds easy.
Who doesn’t want love, support, and abundance flowing their way? But if you’re a chronic giver, receiving requires something much scarier:
Vulnerability.
Letting someone else take the lead.
Trusting that someone else will show up for you.
And when you’ve built your identity around being the strong one, the capable one, the helper, then leaning back feels almost impossible.
What Over-Giving Really Does
Here’s the paradox: the more you over-give, the harder it becomes for others to give back to you.
People with healthy boundaries want to contribute. They want the balance of reciprocity. But if you’re always filling the space, they never get the chance.
Which means you may accidentally teach the people around you: I don’t need anything at all. I’ll handle it. And then, without realizing it, you end up carrying the entire load alone.
The Shift Into Receiving
Healing this isn’t about giving less. It’s about giving thoughtfully, from a place that’s kind, necessary, and balanced.
And when you do, something incredible happens: your nervous system begins to learn that receiving is safe. That support doesn’t make you weak. That letting someone serve you, love you, or even pay you fairly doesn’t make you selfish. Rather, it makes you human.
This is exactly what my new Lucid Hour series is about.
Over the next few weeks, I’ll be guiding a set of hypnotic sessions designed to help you:
Create safety in receiving so you can build new subconscious associations where receiving can equal love, support, abundance.
Release the “burden” identity so you can heal the fear of being greedy or selfish, and step into balance.
Reprogram self-worth around money so you can charge fairly, receive joyfully, and allow your business (and the right clients) to care for you.
Reframe acts of service so you can experience receiving as an act of love, just as much as giving.
Because giving isn’t the problem. One-sided giving is.
Tips to Begin Practicing Now
You don’t need to wait for a full hypnosis session to start shifting this. Try these small practices:
Let yourself receive something tiny today, whether it’s as simple as a compliment, or a bigger gesture of someone offering to help. Practice saying yes, whether you need it or not.
Notice if you have the urge to repay or offer something back immediately, and instead stay with your breath, and let the moment pass.
Recognize synchronous moments. The more you recognize that good can flow to you from anywhere, the more you’ll align with it and let good moments come to you from anyone, anywhere, at any time.
For example, a client came to me, discouraged in love, and wanted to focus on being more visible in her career. After a few sessions, she felt ready to be highly visible at a business event, which is where she also met her future husband. Ironically, she almost blocked this blessing by telling him she was too busy.
The more you practice, the more natural receiving will feel.
Because life was never meant to be you pouring endlessly out. It’s meant to flow both ways.
